This book marks the publication of the first major biography of the fascinating, heroic and revolutionary life of Bertha Pappenheim (1859-1936). Bertha Pappenheim became a legend twice: first, in Vienna, under the pseudonym "Anna O.", when she cured herself of hysterical symptoms by telling fairy tales which she termed "the talking cure", upon which Sigmund Freud based his theory of psychoanalysis. She became an historical legend again, in Germany, as the founder of the first Jewish feminist movement. Through her iconoclastic literary writings, social work, spiritual and social activism for Jewish orphans, abandoned wives, prostitutes, unwed mothers, and girls sold into white slavery, Bertha Pappenheim became one of the most famous Jewish women in Europe at the turn of the last century.   show more
