It's Our Country: Indigenous Arguments for Meaningful Constitutional Recognition and Reform

Why should Indigenous people have a direct say in the decisions that affect their lives? Australia is one of the only liberal democracies still grappling with such a fundamental question. The idea of constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians has become a highly political and contentious issue. It is entangled in institutional processes that rarely allow the diversity of Indigenous opinion to be expressed. With a referendum on the agenda, it is now urgent that Indigenous people have a direct say in the form of recognition that constitutional change might achieve. It's Our Country: Indigenous Arguments for Meaningful Constitutional Recognition and Reform is a collection of essays by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander thinkers and leaders including Patrick Dodson, Noel Pearson, Dawn Casey, Nyunggai Warren Mundine and Mick Mansell. Each essay explores what recognition and constitutional reform might achieve?or not achieve?for Indigenous people.

Constantin Brancusi: Sculpting Within the Essence of Things

Constantin Brancusi is one of the greatest of all sculptors, and a key sculptor of the modern era, with Rodin and Picasso. His influence can be seen in a wide range of Western sculptors, including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, Minimalists and 'land' artists. This new book studies the religious and mythical dimensions of Brancusi's distinctive 'eggs', 'fishes', 'heads' and 'columns'. His central quest was for the 'essence of things', which resulted in purifying a form until the essence was left.

The Summer Diarrhoeas of Infants

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER II SUMMER COMPLAINT.1 Despite all that has been written of late years upon this subject, our knowledge of the intimate nature of this malady, the great scourge of infantile life, has not made great progress, and the treatment being therefore vacillating and uncertain, directed now to one special symptom, now to another, is not attended by any greater success, as is clearly shown by the mortality statistics of our health offices, than it was formerly. I use the term " summer complaint" as I know of no other more applicable, and certainly none that would better indicate the nature of the malady and the therapeutic measures necessary for its relief. i hold this disease to be a morbid entity entirely distinct from the gastro-intestinal catarrhs produced by errors in feeding or diet or by toxic agents developed in the food, and most certainly distinct from cholera infantum, a term so frequently applied to it. 1 Reprinted from New York Medical Journal, 1892. In order that the subject of this paper may be still more clearly defined, a symptomatic description is here appended at the outset: "A malady of the infantile period of life, a disease essentially of hand-fed children, affecting more especially those passing through their second summer." It is a disease that prevails more particularly among the poorer class—those living in crowded tenement-houses and in close, badly aired apartments. It usually makes its appearance with the first days of July, though sometimes with the middle of June if that month be already very hot, as has happened in the last few years, and lasts until the early part of September, when, the nights having become cool, it rapidly disappears. Symptoms.—The symptoms of this malady are restlessness, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, emaciat...

Soldier or Scholar: Stratocles or War

The play translated in this volume confronts problems and questions similar to our own, but from a gap of over four centuries. Should students fight? Which ones? Why? Why not? What role should teachers play in students' decision to enlist? What about the desires and claims of family and loved ones? What are the claims of the state on its youth? How ready are young people to make decisions of this magnitude? How are the views of veterans to be weighed? All these important questions are raised in this play. We hope to offer a document of student life in the sixteenth century that also stimulates reflection on these issues that, unfortunately, are not bound by time and continue to be relevant. Memoirs of a Cotton Patch Kid, Stories of Growing up on a Small Farm in Arkansas in the 1930s and 1940s

When you were a kid, did you ever need a dose of "willow switch tea?" Did you know how to make lye soap? Did you ever eat blackbird dumplin's? Although she grew up on a small farm during the Depression and could pick a nine-foot-long sack of cotton by age thirteen, Eufa Eubanks Adkison never whines about hard times. Her memoirs are upbeat and sunny, filled with mischief and inquisitiveness. They also provide compelling descriptions of the social and economic conditions of Depression-era cotton farming. The oldest of seven children, Eufa was surrounded by brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. No wonder the place where they lived was called Kinfolks Island, Arkansas. There was always someone to play with by the tadpole pond, where the children would catch ground-puppies and toad frogs. Eufa's father worked for the Works Progress Administration and helped build the new school in Delaplaine, Arkansas. When Eufa was sixteen, the Rural Electrification Administration brought electricity to Kinfolks Island. "We had electric lights: bugs and mosquitoes really liked those." A gifted writer with an optimistic soul, Eufa's brief chapters often take the form of fables with little moral lessons. Photographs from her personal collection show happy faces from years gone by, against a stark backdrop of log cabins, tractors and cotton fields.

Sanctification

This in-depth study of 2 Peter 1:3-7 shows us that even though the church takes a leadership role in discipleship, it is only Christ who imparts the divine nature that bears fruit in His disciples. Knowing his death to be imminent, the apostle Peter was impressed by the Holy Spirit to leave a message to all believers concerning the essence of the new life Christ gives to us. Peter shows us that the qualities of this new life increasingly abound as we grow in the personal knowledge of Christ. Sharing with us Peter's insights for developing strength and boldness, Robert Johnston leads us, in Sanctification, a New Beginning, a New Life, to the same spiritual highway traveled by the original disciples as they progressed from infancy to maturity in their walk with Christ. Robert Johnston has practiced as a Certified Public Accountant for more than forty years. In the midst of his career, at age 48, "all things became new." While answering God's call to attend Bible college, Johnston was asked to minister on several live programs and to provide accounting duties over a three year period for a Christian television station. After returning to his practice in accounting, Johnston made a commitment to operate his business according to the principles found in the Bible. Johnston conducts weekly Bible studies with businessmen in his community, and has written many articles as a result of his research of the scriptures in preparation for those studies, culminating in Sanctification, a New Beginning, a New Life. He is now retired and lives near Houston, Texas.

Phyllis of Philistia

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. "THE BISHOP KNEW SOMETHING OF MAN, AND HE KNEW SOMETHING OF THE CHURCH: HE EVEN KNEW SOMETHING OF THE BIBLE." HER father when he came in commended her diligence. He read over those damning extracts, punctuating them with chuckles: he would make an example of that minister who had found it convenient to adopt a course diametrically opposed to the principle involved in his early speeches. He chuckled, reading the extracts while he paced the room, drawing upon his stock of telling phrases, which were calculated to turn the derision of the whole House of Commons upon his opponent. Thus, being very well satisfied with himself, he was satisfied with her, and kissed her, with a sigh. " What a treasure you are to me, dearest one ! " he said. There was a pause before he added, in a contemplative tone: " I suppose a clergyman has no need ever to hunt up the past deliverances of another clergyman in order to confound him out of his own month. Ah, no : I should fancy not." Regret was in his voice. He seemed to suggest to her that he believed her powers would be wasted as the wife of a man who, of course, being a clergyman, could have no enemies. " Dearest papa! " she cried, throwing herself into his arms, and sobbing on his shirt front, " dearest papa, I will not leave you. I don't want to be anyone's wife. I want to be your daughter?only to be your daughter." He comforted her with kisses and soothing smooth- ings of the hair. No, no, he said: he would not be selfish. He would remember that a father was the trustee of his child's happiness. " But I know I can only be happy with you, my father ! " she cried : but it was of no avail. He, being a father and not a mother, was unable to perceive what was in the girl's heart. He considered it quite natural th...

Building Strategic Relationships : How to Extend Your Organization's Reach Through Partnerships, Alliances, and Joint Ventures (Jossey Bass Business and Management Series)

Few organizations can afford all the specialized expertise and technology they need to respond nimbly to emerging needs, regardless of the type of clients they serve. As market demands grow increasingly complex and resources are strained, strategic alliances and joint ventures are becoming business as usual--not only within business sectors, but between them as well. When these alliances succeed, they open up whole new worlds for the participating partners: new products and services, new markets, access to resources, smarter ways of doing things. Building Strategic Relationships shows how successful alliances are launched, developed, and concluded--within the corporate world and between corporate entities and government or nonprofit institutions. The authors draw from more than two hundred interviews and seventy-five case studies of varied partnerships--including a customer-supplier alliance between a newspaper publisher and a newsprint supplier, a joint venture between a school district and a major accounting firm, and others--to provide perspective, guidance, and detailed case examples that will help progressive partners achieve their goals in all phases of partnership.

To the Stars (Star Trek: All)

Best known as Mr. Sulu, helmsman of the Starship EnterpriseTM and Captain of the Starship Excelsior, George Takei is beloved by millions as part of the command team that has taken audiences to new vistas of adventure in Star Trek®--the unprecedented television and feature film phenomenon. From the program's birth in the changing world of the 1960s and death at the hands of the network, to its rebirth in the hearts and minds of loyal fans, the Star Trek story has blazed its own path into our recent cultural history, leading to a series of blockbuster feature films and three new versions of Star Trek for television. The Star Trek story is one of boundless hope and crushing disappointment, wrenching rivalries and incredible achievements. It is also the story of how, after nearly thirty years, the cast of characters from a unique but poorly rated television show have come to be known to millions of Americans and people around the world as family. For George Takei, the Star Trek adventure is intertwined with his personal odyssey through adversity in which four-year-old George and his family were forced by the United States government into internment camps during World War II. Star Trek means much more to George Takei than an extraordinary career that has spanned thirty years. For an American whose ideals faced such a severe test, Star Trek represents a shining embodiment of the American Dream--the promise of an optimistic future in which people from all over the world contribute to a common destiny.

The Arab Lands in the Ottoman Era

This second volume in the series Minnesota Studies in Early Modern History brings together eleven original studies in the history of the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire. One of world history s largest, longest-lived, and most influential empires, the Ottoman Empire controlled the Balkans, Anatolia, and most of the Middle East throughout the early modern era. The studies collected here cover the entire period of Ottoman rule over the Arab lands, from the initial conquest in the early sixteenth century through the empire s collapse following World War I: their geographical scope is similarly broad, spanning a region from Yemen to Morocco. Exploiting a wide range of Ottoman central and provincial narrative and archival sources, as well as European diplomatic and travel accounts, the authors address a wide range of subjects in political, economic, social, religious, and even musical history. They focus not only on relations between the Arab provinces and the Ottoman central authority but also on social, religious, and ethno-regional diversity within individual provinces, and the experiences in Ottoman territory of subjects of other empires. The Introduction by Jane Hathaway, Professor of History at Ohio State University and author of The Arab Lands under Ottoman Rule (Pearson/Longman, 2008), relates these essays to overall developments in Ottoman historiography while paying tribute to Professor Caesar Farah, who inspired many of these contributions

Reconciling One and All: God's Gift to the World

Reconciliation is high on many agendas today. Brian Castle argues convincingly that reconciliation between God and humanity is at the heart of the Christian faith. It must also be sought in the political, social and personal arenas, in the field of ecology and, perhaps most difficult of all, within ourselves. All these areas are interrelated. The Christian understanding of reconciliation makes it Gods gift to the world. But can reconciliation ever be achieved? When can the search for it effectively begin? Who should initiate the process? Is forgiveness possible without repentance? These are just a few of the questions identified, drawing on examples from personal stories and conflicts around the world, and that are explored through the lenses of remembering, victimhood, forgiveness and reaching out to the other. Reconciling One and All can be used for individual reading and reflection or for group study. Readers are encouraged to bring their own experiences, in the form of stories and art, to the reflection. There is space for prayer at the end of each chapter. Brian Castles sensitive, prayerful and well-researched approach emphasizes reconciliation as a process and illustrates some of the major challenges this presents to people of Christian faith in todays complex world. The questions for discussion have been carefully and clearly chosen, providing the reader with an excellent basis for further thought. Robin Eames (Lord Eames OM, former Archbishop of Armagh)

La Jetée: ciné-roman

La Jetée (The Jetty), the legendary science fiction film was released in 1964 and is considered by many critics to be among the best experimental films ever made. Chris Marker, who is an undisputed master of the film essay, composed this post-Apocalypse story of memory and loss almost entirely of black-and-white still photographs. The story involves an experiment in recovering and changing the past through the action of memory, but the film can be read as a poem dominated by a single moving image, which by its context becomes one of the supreme moments in all film. This Zone edition reproduces the film's original images along with the script in both English and French.

Magnetic Astronomy of the Bible

Excerpt from book: I was supplied with a clerk, so as to relieve me from rny hardest work. The times and the seasons of the tides were all left therefore to my judgment: and if I wanted a boat, I had one, and a man or two. I continued my observations on the shore of the harbor at Guaymas, but we could observe the same depression. All showed that the moon repulsed the waters up the Gulf of California. We soon left Guaymas and entered the Harbor of Acapulco. The object of our cruise was to watch the war vessels of France and the Southern Confederacy on this coast of the Pacific. We had not been long in the little snug harbor, when a sloop of war dropped her kedge anchor at the stern of the ship, U. S. IS. Lancaster. This occurred in the night. The sloop proved to be a French man-of-war. Then all were awake to know what was up. The pretense was that the war sloop came in to obtain new supplies of meats and fruits. The Captain of the French corvet threatened to fire on the city in the morning, if supplies were not forthcoming. Admiral Bell heard the complaint of the Frenchman and finally rose to his feet. " You will fire on the city if they do not supply you with provisions, will you " ? " Yes, sir: we will!" answered the Frenchman. " We will be all ready, and sir, take notice ! Whenyou fire on this town you will only fire ' one gun,' for the U. S. ship will blow your ship out of water, or sink you in this harbor.''!!! The next morning came, and the French war-sloop had drawn her small kedge anchor in the night: she now took the light land breezes and put out to sea. In this gem of a port — Acapulco — the tides and the barometer showed the same repulsive force of the moon, and also that of the sun on the open sea, which flows up within one mile of the city into the harbor. ...

Entries from a Hot Pink Notebook

Mixing touches of the mundane and the melodramatic, Brown's confessional debut novel views the bittersweet first year of high school through the eyes of a 13-year-old who's just realizing he doesn't quite fit in. Ben Smith is the youngest in a family whose bonds are fraying. His alcoholic father has left his mother for another woman. His mother is too depressed to leave the house, much less get a job. Brother Jeff is the graduating basketball star in a town so small that no one outside the paper route notices his achievements. Grandma is a Holy Roller. And Ben is a typically confused teen who records his innermost thoughts in a hot-pink notebook, a place where he can unconditionally reveal himself without threat of reprisal. In his first few months at Chappaqua High School in rural Maine, he falls in love with his classmate Aaron and takes his first steps toward nonconformity. But the joy of first love ends abruptly when a jealous friend photographs the two boys kissing in the supply closet. Sent by his parents to summer camp to "beat this thing," he re-closets himself even though he has been "outed" in high school. By summer's end, though, he is able to come to terms with himself, and as he reflects on the last tumultuous year, he knows that he more than fills the bill of the sophomore, the "wise fool."

Gabby: A Fighter Pilot's Life (Schiffer Military History)

If ever a man has earned his place in the annals of military history, that man is Francis "Gabby" Gabreski. His exploits as a fighter pilot in World War II and Korea are legendary: his rise from humble beginnings to success in military and business careers is inspiring. This is the full story of Gabby Gabreski, told in his own words. Gabreski's life is a classic American success story. Born to Polish immigrant parents in 1919, he nearly washed out of Notre Dame and then flight school. He was down to his last chance, and he made the most of it. A witness to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Gabby had his own first taste of air combat flying with a Polish RAF squadron. Shortly thereafter he joined the 56th Fighter Group of the U.S. 8th Air Force, and in seventeen months he shot down twenty-eight German planes, the highest total of any 8th Air Force pilot in Europe. He became a hero whose name was splashed across newspaper headlines from coast to coast. And then, on the very day he was to fly home to his fiancee and a hero's welcome, he took one last combat mission, crashed and, after a daring attempt to avoid capture, finished the war in a POW camp. Gabreski returned to combat in 1951, flying F-86 Sabrejets over Korea. He scored 6.5 more victories there, making him one of the few pilots ever to achieve ace status in two wars and in both propeller and jet aircraft. He retired from the Air Force as a colonel in 1967 and spent the next twenty years working in the aviation industry, sustained, as always, by his devout religious faith and his deep love for his family. Now, drawing on his private documents and photographs, Gabby, along with writer Carl Molesworth, tells his thrilling eyewitness story with a candor and a vivid style that should earn this brave pilot a whole new generation of admirers., over 200 b/w photographs, 8 color aircraft profiles, 8 1/2" x 11"

It could also be used in a graduate Adolescent Psychopathology course.

A Heart So White

Family secrets are the prime elements of A Heart So White, perhaps the greatest novel by "the most talented Spanish author alive" (Il Messagero). Born in 1951 in Madrid, Javier Marias has published twenty books and is a literary phenomenon worldwide. Translated into twenty-eight languages, his books have sold more than three and a half million copies--an amazing quantity for so literary a writer. He has collected a dazzling array of awards, including for A Heart So White the Dublin IMPAC Prize for the best novel published worldwide in English in 1996. A Heart So White, probably Javier Maras's best-known novel, chronicles with unnerving insistence family secrets -- and the relentless power of the past. Juan knows little of the interior life of his father Ranz: each has always seemed comfortable with their friendly but distant orbit. Only when Juan marries (and his new wife begins to find much to talk about with Ranz) does his son consider the past anew, and yet he doesn't really want to know. Secrecy, its possible convenience and even civility, hovers throughout the novel -- it is a sort of anti-detective story of human nature. The sins of the father: the fraudulent and the genuine: marriage and strange repetitions of violence: Marias elegantly sends shafts of inquisitory light into shadows. At the center of A Heart So White are the costs of ambivalence. ("My hands are of your colour: but I shame/To wear a heart so white" -- Shakespeare's Macbeth.)

Cold Pursuit

From the Edgar Award-winning author of Silent Joe, a new hard-hitting thriller of murder, vengeance, and secret passions that will keep readers spellbound. Homicide cop Tom McMichael is on the rotation when an 84-year-old city patriarch named Pete Braga is found bludgeoned to death. Not good news, especially since the Irish McMichaels and the Portuguese Bragas share a violent family history dating back three generations. Years ago Braga shot McMichael's grandfather in a dispute over a paycheck: soon thereafter Braga's son was severely beaten behind a waterfront bar -- legend has it that it was an act of revenge by McMichael's father. McMichael must put aside the old family blood feud, and find the truth about Pete Braga's death. Braga's beautiful nurse is a suspect -- she says she stepped out for some firewood, but key evidence suggests otherwise. The investigation soon expands to include Braga's business, his family, the Catholic diocese, a multi-million dollar Indian casino, a prostitute, a cop, and, of course, the McMichael family. Cold Pursuit is the novel that T. Jefferson Parker fans have been waiting for.

Benedict XVI: An Intimate Portrait

In the person of Pope Benedict XVI, one of the most significant of Europe's intellectuals is heading-up the Vatican. The journalist Peter Seewald, who has known Ratzinger since 1992, conducted the "longest interviews in church history" with him, for two books which were best-sellers world-wide, Salt of the Earth, God and the World. Now he describes these intensive encounters in detail for the first time, and draws a portrait of this brilliant theologian who has put his life entirely at the service of the Catholic Church. Above and beyond that, this book is also the story of a long dialogue which changed Seewald's life. Many people are trying to understand who Benedict XVI really is. On one point they are all agreed: in the person of Joseph Ratzinger, the chair of Peter is occupied by one of the most brilliant minds in the world. Peter Seewald's portrait of Benedict recounts details about the personality and life of Benedict which were hitherto completely unknown.

Unfinished Journey: A Rabbi's Bout With Doubt

Unfinished Journey: A Rabbi's Bout With Doubt represents a collection of personal observations of the diverse groups affiliated with his congregation where he served as rabbi in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. The author also delves into the thorny issues of religious faith that trouble the laity, but also members of the clergy of all faiths who are reluctant to ask themselves whether they honestly believe what they publicly preach. Since his retirement from the active rabbinate, the author began to re-examine the provocative views of his mentors who taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary in his student years. Rabbis, educators and laymen looked to the intellectual "giants" for clarity and religious guidance. Two of these great teachers, Rabbis Mordecai M. Kaplan and Abraham Joshua Heschel, were both eloquent and courageous interpreters of Jewish thought although they represented sharply divergent views on questions such as the meaning of God, the efficacy of prayer, or the concept of the Chosen People. As he reviewed many of the sacred texts, the author began to question and even to doubt what he was taught to accept as irrevocable truths. In recent years, however, he has begun to define what he can comfortably believe in while still maintaining his personally integrity as a teacher of religious values and traditions. He maintains that his "bout with doubt" has helped him find a more mature understanding of what faith can and cannot achieve for the modern generation.

ECOTOXICITY MARINE ENVIRON CL (Ellis Howrood Books in Aquaculture and Fisheries Support)

This book provides a blend of approaches to an increasingly important subject area - the application of toxicological data in the monitoring and control of marine pollution. The assessment of pollution hazards in the sea rests heavily upon the correct interpretation and application of sound and relevant toxicological data, and the book provides a guide to the principles and practices of the measurement of pollutant toxicity to marine organisms and to the application of toxicological data in marine pollution control. It is aimed not only at practitioners but also at students and other newcomers to the field. The book describes and discusses some of the recent developments in the application of ecotoxicological principles, outlining ways in which toxicological techniques can be applied in practice. Theoretical aspects are also covered and the book provides an understanding of the philosophy and rationale of ecotoxicological studies in their application to problems of marine pollution. The "Toxicologist" system of computer programmes for analyzing toxicity test data is published in association with the book, and its development and use described. There has long been a demand for such a programme, and copies of the diskette are available through the Euro-Mediterrannean Centre on Marine Contamination Hazards, Malta. The book makes accessible, through its references, a wide range of primary and secondary sources. It provides a guide to several recent developments in toxicity testing, and practitioners - especially those who want to try out new techniques - should find it a very useful addition to their bookshelves.

Cooper's Novels: Jack Tier.

Excerpt from book: PREFACE. The object of this book is to draw the attention of the reader to some of the social evils that beset us: more particularly in connection with the administration of criminal justice. So long a time has intervened since the thought occurred, and so many interruptions have delayed the progress of the work, that it is felt the subject has been very imperfectly treated: but it is hoped that enough has been done to cause a few to reflect on a matter of vital importance: one that to them may possess the interest of novelty. A strange indifference exists as to the composition of the juries. In our view, the institution itself, so admirable in a monarehy, is totally unsuited to a democracy. The very principle that renders it so safe where there is a great central power to resist, renders it unsafe in a state of society in which few have sufficient resolution to attempt even to resist popular impulses. A hundred instauees might be given in which thejuries of this country are an evil: one or two of which we will point out. In trials between railroad companies and those who dwell along thcir lines, prejudice is usually so strong against the former, that justice for them is nearly hopeless. In certain parts of the country, the juries are made the instruments of defeating the claims of creditors who dwell at a distance, and are believed to have interests opposed to the particular community where the debtor resides. This is a most crying evil, and has becn the souree of many and grievous wrongs. Whenever there is a motive for creating a simulated public opinion, by the united action of several journals, justice is next to hopeless: such combinations rarely, if ever, occurring in its behalf. In cases that are connected with the workings of political sehemes, and not unfreq...

The beloved in this instance is Lucienne Englebert, the beautiful, troubled daughter of a well-known conductor, now orphaned and running riot through Amsterdam. And calling Lucienne to mind is everything and everyone that Van der Valk encounters, from an embittered piano-dealer to an secluded fishing lodge, from a garrulous mechanic to an expensive, abandoned car. Clearly, all roads that Van der Valk is traveling lead back to Lucienne. But is love the only connection? Or could Lucienne possibly have something to do with the murder that Van der Valk is investigating?

Bad Luck, Hot Rocks: Conscience Letters and Photographs from the Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest National Park in Northeast Arizona protects one of the largest deposits of petrified wood in the world. Despite stern warnings, visitors remove several tons of petrified wood from the park each year, often returning these rocks by mail (sometimes years later), accompanied by a "conscience letter." These letters often include stories of misfortune attributed directly to their theft: car troubles, cats with cancer, deaths of family members, etc. Some writers hope that by returning these stolen rocks, good fortune will return to their lives, while others simply apologize or ask forgiveness. "They are beautiful," reads one letter, "but I can't enjoy them. They weigh like a ton of bricks on my conscience. Sorry ." Bad Luck, Hot Rocks documents this ongoing phenomenon, combining a series of original photographs of these otherworldly "bad luck rocks" with facsimiles of intimate, oddly entertaining letters from the park's archives.

Trade Union Law and Cases

Excerpt from book: THE TRADE UNION ACTS, 1871 AND 1876. " The Act of 1871," said Jessel, M. R., in 1880, "no doubt was passed primarily with a view to preventing the treasurers and secretaries and officers of these societies from robbing them: that was the chief object." [This ignores Russell Gurney,s Act, passed in 1868. See p. 115.] " It was discovered that some of these men, abusing the confidence reposed in them, took advantage of the law, which made these societies illegal,by appropriating their funds and property to their own use. That, no doubt, was one of the principal objects, and therefore the Act was passed to get at these men. Another object was this: there was a great difficulty in suing and getting their property from third persons, and one object of the Act was to enable these societies to sue in respect of their property, and also to enable them to hold property! such as a house or office." (Rigby v. Connol, 14 Ch. D. 489). 34 and 35 Vict. c. 31. An Act to amend the Law relating to Trades Unions. [29th June, 1871. The Act of 1876 (see p. 101) is entitled "An Act to amend the Trade Union Act, 1871." Trade Union seems to be the correct term. A notorious instance was Hornby v. Close, in 1867 (L. R. 2 Q. B. 153). The Court of Queen,s Bench (Cockburn, 0. J., Blackburn, Mellor, and Lush, JJ.) unanimously held that Justices were right in dismissing a complaint against a defaulting member of " a society of which one of the objects was the relief of sick, disabled and aged members, and the burial of dead members, but of which one of the main objects was that of a trades union, and the support of members when on strike," on the ground that this last purpose was " illegal." (See p. 51.) Preliminary. SS. i 2- 3- 1. This Act may be cited as " The Trade Union short title. Act...

The Settle and Carlisle Railway: A Personal Story of Britain's Most Spectacular Main Line

The Leeds-Settle-Carlisle line has become one of Britain's best-known railway routes. There have been several threats of closure, culminating in the Government entering the arena in 1989 and forbidding British Rail to close the line. The author has been personally acquainted with the line since 1916. During that time he travelled the route on many occasions, with stop-watch in hand, frequently on the footplate. This study provides coverage of motive power performance over the "Long Drag", as the line is affectionately known to railwaymen and enthusiasts. The book is illustrated with locomotives and trains from the pre-Grouping years of the Midland Railway, through BR diesel traction to the steam specials including such well-known locomotives as Flying Scotsman, Duchess of Hamilton, Clan Line and the Sir Nigel Gresley. The full history of the railway is viewed, including the reasons for the Midland Railway adopting its own line from England to Scotland, in parallel with the West Coast Main Line, planning the construction across some of the bleakest country in Britain. Detailed logs of locomotive runs are examined including the line up to Ais Gill Summit, frequently used for testing locomotives of many different railway companies, often in competitive trials. The line is much used today by steam-hauled special trains and is therefore constantly mentioned in the railway press.

Famous Trials: v. 3

From matricide to mutilation, poisoning, and the cold-blooded murder of a police man, the case-studies in this collection made headlines in their time and remain as gripping today as then. Frederick Browne, sentenced to death for the shooting of P.C. Gutteridge in 1928, endured a veritable "trial by newspaper" when the damning statement of his accomplice was made public. The plight of the defendent who stands accused by heresay and prejudice was illustrated by the notorious case of Florence Maybrick - found guilty of poisoning her husband with arsenic - which exposed the need for a Court of Appeal. This book also features the convictions of Sidney Fox, who killed his mother, and Dr Ruxton who mutilated the bodies of his wife and her maid, which were both triumphs of forensic investigation, while the Clapham Common murder trial held more than a hint of a tragically wrongful conviction.

The Tsimshian: Images of the Past : Views for the Present

In 1979, a group of scholars specializing in Tsimshian studies and members of the Tsimshian community met in the coastal village of Hartley Bay, British Columbia, to share insights on Tsimshian culture and history. This volume, a result of that gathering, examines Tsimshian culture from the prehistoric period to the recent past, and includes contributions from such diverse perspectives as archaeology, linguistics and social anthropology. The contributors demonstrate a balance between current fieldwork and careful archival analysis, as they build on the voluminous materials that are a legacy of the scholarship of such major figures as Boas, Barbeau, Tate and Garfield. The book moves beyond earlier studies in presenting interpretations of previously described aspects of the Tsimshian culture, including the crest system, which is shared with other northwest groups, and the participation of the Tsimshian in the "non-native" economy of the region. There is also much original material on such subjects as shamanism, basketry, masking, and feasting.

Performance Funding for Public Higher Education: Fad or Trend: New Directions for Institutional Research (J-B IR Single Issue Institutional Research)

Performance funding for public higher education has become a popular topic in state capitols in the 1990s. The time seemed right for tying resources to results. Performance funding represents the most recent step in the search for external accountability and improved performance that started with outcomes assessment and performance reporting. The chapters in this volume examine the conflicts and issues raised by performance funding as well as the similarities and differences in state programs. They reflect the information gathered and lessons learned from a national study of performance funding supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts. This is the 97th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Institutional Research.

Winter in July

Leading New Zealand and Australian children's authors not only tell the stories behind their books and share some of their writing secrets, they describe trends that influence what is being published now. Until the past decade or so, children in Australia and New Zealand grew up reading mostly books from Britain or the United States. Several of the authors explain why so few children's books were published in Australia and New Zealand before the 1980s and why children's book publishing is now a flourishing industry there. Each chapter features an informal presentation given to a group of American librarians, teachers, readers, and writers during a story tour of New Zealand and Australia. The reader will meet New Zealand authors Dorothy Butler, Tessa Duder, Gavin Bishop, and Margaret Mahy, and Australian authors Jeannie Baker, Robin Klein, Peter Gouldthorpe, John Marsden, and Ivan Southall. Overviews by Betty Gilderdale, professor of children's literature in New Zealand, and Mark MacLeod, children's publishing director for Random House Australia, set the stage for chapters about the authors.

Making Fields of Merit: Buddhist Femal Ascetics and Gendered Orders in Thailand (Critical Dialogues in Southeast Asian Studies)

Religion plays a central role in Thai society with Buddhism intertwined in the daily lives of the people. Religion also plays an important role in establishing gender boundaries. The growth in recent decades of self-governing nunneries and the increasing interest of Thai women in a Buddhist monastic life are notable changes in the religion/gender dynamic. This anthropological study considers religion and gender relations through the lens of the lives, actions, and roles in Thai society of Buddhist nuns (mae chii). Making Fields of Merit presents a unique ethnography of Thai Buddhist nuns, examines what it implies to be a female ascetic in contemporary Thailand, and analyzes how the ordained state for women fits into the wider gender patterns found in Thai society. The study also deals with the nuns' agency in creating religious space and authority for women. It raises questions about how the position of Thai Buddhist nuns outside the Buddhist sangha affects their religious legitimacy and describes recent moves to restore a Theravada order of female monks.

Samuel Johnson: Selected Writings

Thanks to Boswell’s monumental biography of Samuel Johnson, we remember Dr. Johnson today as a great wit and conversationalist, the rationalist epitome and the sage of the Enlightenment. He is more often quoted than read, his name invoked in party conversation on such diverse topics as marriage, sleep, deceit, mental concentration, and patriotism, to generally humorous effect. But in Johnson’s own day, he was best known as an essayist, critic, and lexicographer: a gifted writer possessed of great force of mind and wisdom. Writing a century after Johnson, Ruskin wrote of Johnson’s essays: He “taught me to measure life, and distrust fortune?he saved me forever from false thoughts and futile speculations.” Peter Martin here presents “the heart of Johnson,” a selection of some of Johnson’s best moral and critical essays. At the center of this collection are the periodical essays from the Rambler, Adventurer, and Idler. Also included are Johnson’s great moral fable, Rasselas: the Prefaces to the Dictionary and his edition of Shakespeare: and selections from Lives of the Poets. Together, these works?allied in their literary, social, and moral concerns?are the ones that continue to speak urgently to readers today.

The Sharp End (Hammer's Slammers, Bk 7)

Gangs rule Cantilucca. Two syndicates dominate the planet. Guns are the only law. Both sides are arming for a bloody showdown that can only end with a handful of survivors sifting for subsistence in the ruins of what could be a rich world. Then the survey team arrives . . . David Drake introduces a new kind of Hammer's Slammer. — Kirkus Reviews — Another of Drake's military sf yarns about Hammer's Slammers, the expert mercenary troops of planet Nieuw Friesland. A small, handpicked team of specialists, led by Major Matthew Coke, arrives on planet Cantilucca to investigate the possibility of selling the Slammers' services. But Cantilucca, the primary source of a recreational drug, is ruled by two competing gangs--the L'Escorials and the Astras--both bloodthirsty, brutal, drug-addicted, unwashed, and generally arrogant. In Coke's judgment, either of the gangs could afford to hire Slammers to defeat the opposition, but this would leave the planet in the hands of a single gang, its already wretched inhabitants worse off than before. So Coke and company play both ends against the middle, slaughtering gangsters at every opportunity, until Cantilucca's interstellar bankers lose patience and send in their own troops. Things look bleak for Coke's team, but Slammer reinforcements arrive with impeccable timing. Agreeable slam-bang action for series fans, and certainly much more convincingly constructed than either The Jungle (1991) or Fortress (1987). -- Copyright (c)1993, Kirkus Associates,LP.

On teething of infants

Excerpt from book: 78 THE NEGLECTS WHICH PREVAIL IN REGARD TO TEETHING OF INFANTS. The negligence on the part of females during the development of the milk-teeth towards infants consigned to their care, emanates chiefly from the popular errors on which I have enlarged in the preceding chapter. To have her neglect prominently brought before her, may be unwelcome and poignant to a sensitive mother: but her inattention to the illness of her infant while teething, the magnitude of her fault, and the perils which spring therefrom must be told, that its injurious influence may be comprehended: and being understood she may manage her child more sensibly during the evolution of the temporary teeth, by which he may be spared a great deal of avoidable sickness, and sinking prematurely into the grave. Granting that the derangement of the health of the child is due to the agency of the dental process on its system, strangely enough, parentsare, on this account, more negligent in obtaining medical advice. As they are unable to distinguish the disorders incidental to the process from others, which are not excited by, although concurrent with it, they neglect every infantile disease alike, concluding " it is only the teeth." The diseases, whether they are the consequences or merely the complications of dentition, happen at a time of life when they are doubly perilous,—as the body of the infant is undergoing wonderful changes, the various organs are being developed, they are assuming their functions, and are in a state of hyperasmia, which conjointly tend to the rapid advancement of the diseases: whereby the babe may be, to the surprise of the mother, unexpectedly and quickly, when the medicines which are necessary have not been promptly employed, reduced to a condition of extreme danger. What are...

Glass: Mechanics and Technology

This is the first book to discuss the correlation between the performance of industrial processes and practice-relevant properties, such as strength and optical properties. Interdisciplinary in his approach, the author discusses both the science and technology, starting with glass past and present, its structure, and rheology. The sections on properties include mechanical strength and contact resistance, ageing, mechanics of glass processes, the production and control of residual stresses, high-tech producers and current research and development. Applications covered include glazing, packaging, optical glass, glass fibers for reinforcement, and abrasive tools.

The life of a collegian (1853)

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER II. Desaugiehs. A College life is, or used to be, about as different from any other, as that of the free and wandering Gitano is from the staid and sombre existence of a Latter-,day Saint. It is separated by a whole double diapason from all other forms of social intercourse, to such a degree, that a residence of some years in such a place, and surrounded by such associations, will colour an entire after-life. The ceremonies and conventionalities of civilization, as they are elsewhere generally recognised and obeyed, are disowned, and practically unknown. All the duties and pleasures of life are here followed, with a total disregard of the hours of day and night: and a sublime contempt for places, times, and persons. Men who are intimately acquainted, enter each other's chambers, at all times, and on all occasions, freely and unceremoniously, and enjoy a freedom of speech, and a community of possession, worthy of the Chaldees of old, or the sons of the houseless desert: but then their season of life is the spring, teeming with warm hearts, and open and generous affections." They have not yet learned to be selfish. There were, at the era of the events recorded in this narrative, certain peculiarities which, whether favourably or not, distinguished college men from the external world. They were noticeable for being the most fashionably- dressed men in the city, except on Sundays, when, if they did make their appearanceabroad, they made it a point to present themselves in old clothes: in order, as they said, to ...

Teaching English in Missions: Effectiveness and Integrity

English teaching is common in missions today. However, there has been relatively little discussion on what constitutes effectiveness in English ministries. This book aims to foster such discussion. It first addresses issues of concern in English ministries and then suggests criteria for effectiveness, considerations in teacher preparation, and models for the teaching of English in missions.

Forgotten Voices Desert Victory

For Britain in the first half of World War II, the importance of defending the Middle East against the Axis powers was second only to defending the homeland against invasion. Had the Allies lost in North Africa, the vital life-line through the Suez Canal to Australia and India would have been cut. More crucial was protecting the route to the oilfields of the Persian Gulf. Without oil, Britain could not fight. The initial threat came from a large Italian Army, who, from their bases in Libya, were quick to take British-held ground in Egypt. Yet the professional British soldiers, along with tough all-volunteer regiments from Australia and New Zealand, easily defeated the poorly lead Italians. Churchill, confident that this front was secure, transferred troops and equipment to Greece, little realizing what the remaining troops would face when Rommel and his Panzer Division arrived. With their armies fighting over vast distances on rugged terrain, and supply lines often stretched to breaking point, both Rommel and the then little-known General Montgomery had to take huge tactical risks. Good intelligence was vital, so the elite Long Range Desert Group was formed, capable of covert operations behind enemy lines. David Stirling famously founded the SAS in the Western Desert, trained to perform audacious sabotage missions. Told in the voices of the men who were there this is the story of the Western Desert, and how the Allies struck the first successful blow to Axis forces and achieved this remarkable Second World War victory.

Takaharu Yui Tezuka: Nostalgic Future

The Toyko firm Tezuka Architects, headed by Takaharu and Yui Tezuka, is enjoying an increasingly international reputation for its refined blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese aesthetics, developing solutions which seem refreshingly unconventional while remaining anchored in the scale and needs of everyday life. (The names of their recent projects--"Roof House," "Wall-less House" and "Sky House"--convey the flavor and feel of this amalgam.) Tezuka buildings often sport such features as large sliding-door fronts and verandas, and make particular use of wood and lightweight steel in order to effect a smooth back-and-forth flow between building and environment. In this respect their buildings call to mind centuries-old Japanese architectural tradition, which is absorbed into present day developments in design and construction technologies. Large public buildings such as the Fuji kindergarten and the Natural History Museum in Matsunoyama demonstrate the popularity of this synthesis.

The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Criminology

The authors provide the reader with a selective "Cliff Note" approach to the definitions of crime, the theories of crime, and the related causal theory. Included are major contributors to the study of criminology that span or encompass many interacting disciplines-none of which holds a singular or definitive explanation for the definition of crime, causal factors of deviance, or problems associated with crime. A review of the sources used to compile THE ENCYCLOPEDIC DICTIONARY OF CRIMINOLOGY attests to the attention and scope this topic has received from scholars within the broad field of criminology and criminal justice.

Feminist Television Criticism

The first edition of this book immediately became a defining text for feminist television criticism, with an influence extending across television, media and screen studies - and the second edition will be similarly agenda-setting. Completely revised and updated throughout, it takes into account the changes in the television industry, the academic field of television studies and the culture and politics of feminist movements. With fifteen of the eighteen extracts being new to the second edition, the readings offer a detailed analysis of a wide range of case studies, topics and approaches, including genres, audiences, performers and programmes such as 'Sex and the City', `Prime Suspect', Oprah and Buffy. With a new introduction to the volume tracing developments in the field and introductions to each thematic section, the editors engage in a series of debates surrounding the main issues of feminist television scholarship. They explore how television represents feminism and consider how critics themselves have created feminism and post-feminism as historical categories and political identities. Readings consider women who are engaged in various aspects of television production on both sides of the camera and examine how television targets and imagines its female audience, as well as how women respond to and use television in their everyday lives. Feminist Television Criticism is inspiring reading for film, media, cultural and gender studies students.

Excerpt: THE NATURE CURE. -- FOR THE MIND. People, especially the young, often get a diseased appetite for excitement and artificial amusements, and what is called society, to the exclusion of far better things: not because the taste was originally depraved, but because life has presented to them no real and abiding interest. It is common to hear such persons declare iu hours of reaction and discontent, that they find nothing worth living for: they find no pursuit worth all the toil and trouble it costs, and no aim worthy of life. The pleasures they devour last but a little while, and continual change and new excitements are craved with perpetual hunger, which no amount of feeding ever satisfies -- the only satiety being spiritual dyspepsia and disgust. Men usually seek refuge in business from the hungry needs of their-inner selves, and try to quench their soul's perennial thirst with eager draughts of gain. Like Midas, they seek to turn all that they touch into gold : and when it is done, they find themselves like him, starving at their own banquets, because gold is neither food nor drink. Women commonly seek their refuge in matrimony, only to find themselves called upon to feed instead of being fed : and behold their garners are empty and their fountains dry -- they perish of thirst and starvation of mind and heart, and others perish with them: so we see the world peopled with the famished skeletons ofmen and women, who seem, Prometheus-like, to be for ever renewed, but...
